Atlas from Space: Satellite View of Pergamum (modern Bergama)

Ancient Pergamum (or "Pergamon") is partially covered over by the modern city of Bergama, Turkey (2007 population of 58,000). Among other remains lying beneath the modern city are a theater, a stadium, and a large public building (known as the Red Basilica). The ancient city's acropolis and its Aesklepion, however, were not covered and have received considerable attention by generations of archaeologists. Not all of it is available for viewing on site or at the local archaeological museum, however. Now residing in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, are the great Altar of Zeus and the propylon of the Temple of Athena.
